NOTES: Ventura College jumped to the front of the pack in what is expected to be a fiercely contested men’s championship.  Diablo Valley won the 200 free relay, 200 individual medley, and the 400 medley relay but posted enough high marks in other events to be considered favorites for the State Title. Defending State Champion Orange Coast is lurking just behind in the rankings thanks to Jonathan Franzen, who took home first place in the 3 meter diving.  Akbar Nasution’s win in the 500 freestyle has Chaffey in the seventh spot and Rafael Aponte took this year’s title as the State fastest man.  Aponte’s win in the 50 freestyle put Ventura just ahead of Diablo Valley in day one. Diablo Valley’s 200 free relay broke the state record posting a time of 1:22.22.

NOTES: Diablo Valley began 2008 CCCAA Swimming and Diving Championships by winning the opening event with a time of 1:39.06 in the 200 Free Relay.  But the top seed Santa Rosa seemed unscathed on day one, with a commanding 32.5 point lead over Ventura.  Alex Peters from Saddleback took home the first individual hardware of the day, posting an impressive time of 4:59.55.  Riverside’s Paloma Dinkel dominated the field and captured the 100 IM title with 2 seconds separating first and second place.  Once again nobody in the complex could catch the State’s fastest woman in the 50 freestyle.  American River’s Anne Scott blew away the field a time of :23.45. Santa Rosa cleaned up the evening with a big win in the 400 Medley Relay, with a time of 4:03.69.  During the intermission between the preliminary heats and the finals, Orange Coast’s Nikki Burrelli won the 1-meter diving competition.

Next: Prelims heats for Friday’s events will begin at 9:30 AM and the finals will start at 5 PM.  The women’s three-meter diving and men’s one-meter diving will begin immediately following the prelim session.
